This is especially noticeable when you want more than one shot in a row. If the capsule container is full, you have to empty it before you can continue — and that brief pause is exactly when drips and residue tend to end up on the countertop.

On some countertop materials, it is especially important to remove water quickly. Kitchen countertop manufacturers generally recommend wiping up spills and standing water rather than leaving them.

An underlay can therefore be a simple extra layer of protection between your coffee machine and the countertop.

What Types of Coffee Machine Underlays Are Available?

There are essentially two different solutions.

Silicone mat under the coffee machine

A silicone mat is the universal solution. The advantage is that it can be used under many different coffee machines and other kitchen appliances. The disadvantage is that it is not designed around the specific shape of your machine — universal models can therefore be significantly larger than the machine itself.

Most silicone mats are also flat surfaces without a raised grid. This means the machine sits directly in any drips or spills that collect on the mat. When it is time to clean the mat, the machine must be moved temporarily — and there is a risk of scratching the countertop in the process.

It is a sensible solution if function and flexibility matter more than an integrated look.

Model-specific drip tray under the coffee machine

A model-specific drip tray takes a different approach. Instead of making one large mat that must fit many machines, the tray is developed for one specific machine or machine family.

This makes it possible to account for the machine's footprint, the placement of the feet, the machine's outer contour, stability, cleaning, and the visual impression on the kitchen counter.

What Is the Difference Between the Machine's Drip Tray and ViTRAY?

It is important to distinguish between the two.

A Nespresso machine's original drip tray is part of the coffee machine itself. It collects liquid around the coffee outlet.

A ViTRAY is placed beneath the coffee machine and protects the area between the machine and the countertop. ViTRAY therefore does not replace the machine's original drip tray.

This is especially important for the Creatista Plus. Nespresso states that the machine must be used with its original drip tray and drip grid.

Underlay for Nespresso CitiZ

The Nespresso CitiZ has a characteristically narrow design. Using a large universal coffee mat means the underlay can end up significantly wider than the machine itself.

Underlay for Nespresso CitiZ Platinum

CitiZ and CitiZ Platinum should not be treated as the same machine when choosing model-specific accessories.

The Creatista Plus is larger and has a different construction than the CitiZ models.

ViTRAY 3 is developed as a separate underlay compatible with the Nespresso Creatista Plus.

The Creatista Plus already has its own original drip tray. ViTRAY 3 should therefore be understood as extra protection beneath the entire machine — not as a replacement part for Nespresso.

It is also worth knowing that water beneath the machine itself can be a sign of a problem. The Creatista Plus troubleshooting guide states that if water appears under the machine, the original drip tray should be emptied and checked for correct installation; if the problem continues, contact Nespresso.

What Should You Choose?

Choose a universal silicone mat if you want an inexpensive underlay that can later be used with other kitchen appliances.

Choose a model-specific drip tray if you prioritise a precise fit, a smaller visual footprint, a removable grid that keeps the machine above collected liquid — with drips collected discreetly out of sight — and an underlay developed for your specific machine.

Neither solution should be used to ignore an actual leak from the coffee machine.
